Day 1-3: Historic and Modern Stuttgart

Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Schlossplatz
Arrive in Stuttgart, a city where innovation and tradition live side by side. Begin your adventure wandering the expansive Schlossplatz, soaking in the elegant blend of Baroque palace grounds with contemporary city vibes. Don't miss the nearby Königsbau Passage for some shopping and a coffee break.

Day 2: Automotive Marvels and Vineyards
Dive into Stuttgart’s claim to fame with visits to the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums — a must for car enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Later, venture to the vineyards on the city's outskirts; the panorama of rolling green hills is breathtaking after a glass of local Trollinger wine. Insider tip: avoid weekends here if you don't like crowds!

Day 3: A Day in the Quaint Suburb of Bad Cannstatt
Today we explore Bad Cannstatt, Stuttgart’s historic spa district. The mineral baths offer an authentic relaxation experience while the local market is a treasure trove of regional delicacies. For lunch, savor Maultaschen (Swabian ravioli) at a cozy local eatery.

Travel options to next location:
Preferred: Take the high-speed train from Stuttgart to Madrid with one transfer in Paris (approx. 11 hours total but very scenic and comfortable).
Alternative: Fly from Stuttgart Airport to Madrid (around 3 hours direct flight).

Day 4-6: Captivating and Vibrant Madrid

Day 4: Tapas and Royal Grandeur
Welcome to Madrid! Start with the lively Plaza Mayor and nearby Mercado de San Miguel, where tapas and local wine abound. Feast on jamón ibérico and patatas bravas at a budget-friendly bar like El Sur or at the high-end Sobrino de Botín, the world’s oldest restaurant.

Day 5: Artistic Treasures and Retiro Park
Immerse in culture at the Golden Triangle of Art: Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen museums. Early morning is best to dodge the crowds (especially the Prado). Relax afterward at Retiro Park, where I once spent a sunny afternoon people-watching and boating on the lake — pure bliss! Just avoid weekends as it can get packed.

Day 6: Deep Dive into Lavapiés
Discover Madrid’s multicultural neighborhood of Lavapiés, with its street art and global eateries. One afternoon, I joined an impromptu flamenco performance in a tucked-away tablao, which turned out to be a highlight — raw energy and passionate dancing. Dine on diverse cuisines here, ranging from affordable Indian and African dishes to chic fusion spots.

Travel options to next location:
Preferred: Take the train from Madrid to Lisbon; the overnight Trenhotel is a comfortable, adventure-filled way to travel.
Alternative: Domestic flight from Madrid to Lisbon (1 hour direct).

Day 7-9: Charming and Coastal Lisbon

Day 7: Alfama and Pastel de Nata
Dive into Lisbon's oldest district, Alfama, with its narrow cobbled streets, colorful houses, and stunning views from Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Try the iconic pastel de nata at Pastéis de Belém — I still remember the warm custard melting in my mouth! Eat at Taberna Sal Grosso for budget-friendly Portuguese plates, or the Michelin-starred Belcanto for a refined experience.

Day 8: Belem Tower and Fado Night
Visit the iconic Belem Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both steeped in maritime history. By evening, experience an authentic Fado performance in a local tavern; one night, I felt the heartfelt melancholy in the singer’s voice resonate deep inside — truly unforgettable. If you’re not an Fado fan, a walk along the Tagus River at sunset is equally magical.

Day 9: Sintra Day Trip and Farewell
Take a day trip to the fairy-tale town of Sintra, just 40 minutes by train. Explore the whimsical Pena Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira gardens. This was one of my favorite days, with so many surprises around every corner — bring comfy shoes! Return to Lisbon for one last seafood feast at Cervejaria Ramiro.
